5 Day Inca Trail Hike Tour Details

The 5-Day Inca Trail Hike to Machu Picchu is an extended option of the 4 Days Classic Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu. Inca Trail 5 Days trek is one of our signature tours. We have designed the itinerary to let you spend more time visiting the Inca ruins along the way.

National Geographic Travel Magazine recognizes the trail as one of the 25 most beautiful trails in the world. You will be retracing the footsteps of the Incas all the way through. The trail is dotted with many lesser-known Inca ruins that are accessible only to those hiking the trail.

Only those hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu get the opportunity of entering Machu Picchu citadel through the sun gate (Inti Pinku) at sunrise and relish the spectacular views of the Inca citadel from here.

As Inca Trail is one of the most popular trails in South America, it tops the bucket list of many travelers visiting the Inca citadel.

Inca Trail Permits:

To protect the trail local authorities have introduced Inca Trail permits. It allows access to only 500 people a day. This number includes guides, porters, and cooks so barely 200 trekkers from hundreds of tour operating companies gain access each day.

We highly recommend booking your 5-Day Inca Trail hike at least six months in advance.

The highest point of the 5-Day Inca Trail Hike to Machu Picchu is the infamous Dead Woman’s Pass at 4200 meters above sea level (13780 ft.). It is imperative that you spend a few days in Cusco before the trek and acclimatize to avoid altitude sickness.

After the guided tour of Machu Picchu, you will have the option of climbing Machu Picchu Mountain or Huayna Picchu mountain.

Just like Inca Trail, you will also need permits to hike to these peaks which too are sold out months in advance. So if you intend to hike to any of these peaks then do let us know at the time of booking the tour.

5 Day Inca Trail Hike - Inca Trail 5 Days

Day 1Cusco - Piscacucho - Hatun Chaca

We will begin the 5-day Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu early in the morning at 0500 AM by picking you up from your hotel in Cusco.

Then in our private transport, we will be driving you for two and a half hours along the Sacred Valley of the Incas to Ollantaytambo, the former administrative capital of the Incas.

All our vehicles are equipped with comfortable seats to offer our guests a seamless travel experience. As the drive is a bit longer, you can wink a nap so you arrive fresh to start the hike.

We will be having a brief stop in Ollantaytambo so you can pick up some last-minute things that you may need during the hike.

We will then drive to Piskacucho or Km.82. This is the starting point of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The trailhead gets its name (Km 82) after its distance from Cusco en route to Machu Picchu.

Here we will be going through a security checkpoint where your original passport will be verified against your Inca Trail permit.

5 Day Inca Trail Hike

After a short briefing and safety instructions, we will gradually begin hiking our 5-Day Inca Trail Hike to Machu Picchu. We will begin with two hours easy hike to the first Inca archaeological complex on the trail, Patallacta 3829m/12562.34ft.

Our local expert will be giving you an immersive tour of the complex. You will be introduced to the Andean Traditions and the prominence of the complex to the Incas.

You will have plenty of time to soak in the views and capture the staggering views of the Urubamba river snaking through the remote villages and farms. We will be hiking for two hours to our lunch camp where an exquisite Andean meal will be served amidst a beautiful setting.

After lunch, we will be hiking for another two hours to our exclusive campsite in Hatunchaca. We will be serving you a traditional Andean meal for dinner.

Day 2Hatun Chaca - Llullucha Pampa - Pacaymayo

Our crew will be waking you up to a cup of freshly brewed Peruvian coffee or Tea. We will then serve a nutritious breakfast to prepare you for the most challenging yet interesting day hike of the Inca Trail 5 Days to Machu Picchu.

We will leave the campsite and start hiking amidst a beautiful setting, up the hill to the infamous Dead Woman’s Pass. Locally known as Warmi Wañusqa, at 4215 meters above sea level (13779 ft), this is the highest point of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

The three hours uphill hike is somewhat challenging hence it is imperative that you are well-acclimatized before beginning the hike. This section of the trail offers staggering views of the snow-capped Andean peaks as we get closer to the pass.

We will spend some time resting and contemplating the alluring views of the valley below. Our local expert will be sharing stories and beliefs of locals and why the pass is called as the “Dead Woman’s Pass”.

Pacaymayo:

After contemplating the view, we will gradually begin our downhill hike to the lush tropical jungle for two hours. We will be reaching our campsite in Pacaymayo for lunch. Our support team will be reaching there before you so they can get everything organized for you as you arrive.

We will be serving a well-deserved lunch. You can spend the evening taking a siesta or doing some short hikes here. The region is home to Andean deers and Endemic birds.

After witnessing the sunset, we will be serving dinner as we will unwind for the day.

Day 3Pacaymayo - Chaqui Cocha - Phuyu Patamarca

We will be serving you a hot cup of Coca Tea or Coffee followed by a traditional breakfast. We will then start hiking 45 minutes up the hill to Runku Raqay. It is a beautiful Inca complex that is surrounded by two waterfalls.

Our local expert will be giving you an immersive tour of the Inca complex. Once you have had the fill of the site, we will be hiking further up for another 45 minutes to Runkuraqay Pass. This is the last high pass that we will be crossing on the 5-Day Inca Trail Hike.

We will then begin descending to the Amazon Cloud Forest leaving behind the sights of snow-capped Andean peaks. Along the way down, we will be visiting another imposing archaeological complex, Sayacmarca. It is 3600 meters above sea level (11811 feet).

The Incas used this complex to worship Apus, the high mountain peaks. Our local expert will be giving you a tour of the complex and will share some Andean beliefs with you.

After the tour, we will be hiking further down the hill to the Chaqui Cocha camp. Here we will be stopping for lunch.

Phuyu Patamarca

After lunch, we will be hiking for two more hours through the cloud forest to Phuyupatamarca (3650m/11975ft.). This is another impressive Inca ruin along the trail. The name Phuyupatamarca in Quechua signifies, “City in Clouds”.

From the complex, you will get a closer view of the Machu Picchu mountain and Urubamba river down below snaking through the valley. After the tour and after witnessing the sunset, we will return to the campsite for dinner.

Day 4Phuyu Patamarca - Wiñay Wayna - Aguas Calientes

As always, we will be serving you a hot cup of coffee or tea and a traditional breakfast. We will be hiking down the hill through the cobblestone steps to the most beautiful and unmissable Inca site, Wiñay Wayna.

Along the way, we will be stopping in Intipata’s viewpoint. You will be getting a closer view of the agricultural sector of Machu Picchu.

Once in Wiñay Wayna, we will be visiting the archaeological complex while our chef would prepare the last delicious camp meal of the trail. The name Wiñay Wayna in Quechua means forever young.

The beauty of the complex is credited primarily to the intricacy of the architectural development in the housing structures in the upper action and the section on the lower edge accessible by a long staircase.

After touring the complex, we will be returning to the campsite for lunch. Our support team, who accompanied us from the trailhead will be leaving us here. So if you want to express your gratitude in form of tips or gifts you may do so.

Leaving behind the Wiñay Wayna complex, we will continue hiking further for an hour and a half to Inti Punku or Sungate. You will get to relish the first view of the Machu Picchu archaeological complex from here.

Access to the Machu Picchu complex through the sun gate is restricted only to those hiking the Inca Trail.

After witnessing the sunset in Machu Picchu from the sun gate, we will be hiking down to the main entrance. We will be boarding the tourist bus for the drive down the hill to Aguas Calientes town where we will be accommodating you in a comfortable ensuite hotel room for the night.

Day 5Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Ollantaytambo - Cusco

We will be leaving the hotel in Aguas Calientes bright and early for a guided tour of Machu Picchu. We will be boarding the 25 minutes bus ride up the hill to the entrance of the complex.

As you enter the citadel, you will witness the golden rays of the morning sun beaming on the Inca walls as the blanket of clouds would unveil the emblematic Inca citadel to you.

We will begin the tour with an introduction to the Inca Empire and the flora and fauna in the region. On this two-hour guided tour, we will be visiting the prominent parts of the Inca citadel.

After the tour, you will have some free time. If you have booked to hike Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu mountain, our tour guide will direct you to the respective trailhead.

Later in the evening, we will be taking the bus back down to Aguas Calientes town. You will have some free time here for shopping or to have lunch.

You will then take a train back to Ollantaytambo. Our representative will be meeting you at the train station on arrival and will be transferring you back to your hotel in Cusco. We will be reaching by 09:30 PM.
