Humantay Lake Peru Day Trip is a popular day tour from Cusco Peru as Rainbow Mountain. Locally known as Laguna Humantay Cusco, it is a turquoise lake nestled up in the Andes at 4,200 meters above sea level.
Humantay Lake gets its name from the snow capped Humantay Mountain. The lake nestles on its foothills. It is fed by the melting snow from the hill.
This is the first stop on the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. Humantay Lake Peru has been sacred to the Andean people since the Inca civilization. This is primarily because they worshipped the nature entities for a good yielding.
Even today Shamans (Andean priests) hike up to the lagoon to offer Apacheta. It is a process of piling stones each on top of the other to thank the Mother Earth (Pachamama) for accompanying them on their journey.
Humantay Lake Peru can only be reached by hiking for 1.5 hours from Soraypampa. If you are not keen on hiking, you can rent a horse at an additional cost.
Laguna Humantay Cusco is a high altitude trek, we highly recommend you to spend at least two days in Cusco before the full day hike and acclimate to avoid altitude sickness.

Ruben is phenomenal! Take my word for it and book Ruben as your personal tour guide to experience the beautiful landscape of Peru. We were recommended Ruben by a friend and we were not disappointed. He built an itinerary around our interests. He is personable and friendly. We felt like we’ve known Ruben for years even after first meeting him. We had personal transportation to and from the airport and every tour. We stayed at Wild Rover Hostel and were easily picked up each day. We had no need to worry thanks to him. He kept us updated on when would be the best times to go to every place. From the Sacred Valley to Lake Humantay to the salt mines to Machu Picchu, we had the most incredible time! This was really my first experience with a tour guide and I was beyond impressed with his knowledge of the land and attention to detail. We loved every step of the way. I can’t say enough good things about Ruben, his company, and every one of his tours. He’s friendly, compassionate, and knowledgeable. We can’t wait to come back again and tour with him again, (next time his Incan camping tour!) Also, we ordered hiking poles on amazon for like $30 (and flew internationally with them) and highly recommend them. If you’re reading this, theres really no reason to look any further or at any other tour guide. Seriously! He made this one of the best trips possible (and we’ve seen many parts of the world). You will not be disappointed!
