For the most adventurous hikers, this is an exuberant and less explored alternative trek which will take you to join the classic Inca Trail toward Machu Picchu city entering through the Sun Gate. Exploring this trail, you are will feel and experience the strength of the Apu Salkantay venerated and respected by Andean people.
Exceptional for its scenery, the views of the snow-capped mountains of Humantay 5,850m/19.192ft, Salkantay 6,250m/20,505ft. Sisay Pampa community and its aqueduct; joining the Inca Trail and exploring the Inca sites along the way; great views to the Urubamba Valley, finally, reach Machu Picchu city just like the classic Inca Trail trekkers do.

Day 1
DAY 1: CUSCO - MOLLEPATA – MARKUQASA PASS – CHALLACANCHA

We leave Cusco at 5 am. in our private transportation, we will drive for about 2 hours to Tarawasi archaeological site in Limatambo. After a good breakfast we will to Mollepata from where we will start our adventure, after trekking about 3 hours we will get to the lunch place at Markuqasa pass we will have great views of Soraypampa and Humantay Mt. 5,900m/19,356ft, in the afternoon after lunch we will go head on a gentle path for about two hours to the first camp site at Challacancha.

Today’s trek is relatively easy to adjust our body to the altitude; Challacancha is a perfect place to camp due to its wide open are, from where we will be able to appreciate the Milkyway if the weather permits us.

Day 2
DAY 2: CHALLACANCHA - SALKANTAYPAMPA – PAMPAJAPONESA

In the morning after breakfast, we leave and begin with a small uphill which leads up us to the water duct, from where we will appreciate the Humantay Mountain, subsequently, we continue the straight trail by the channel until Soraypampa 3,925m our lunch place, and on our way further away we will see Salkantay Mountain. At Soraypampa, we will have the chance to visit the Humantay lagoon. After lunch, we continue on to our campsite at Pampa Japonesa spot. Once we get there, depending on the time, we will explore the area and visit the turquoise lagoon at the foot of the Apu Salkantay, we guaranty you will enjoy the views of all the snow-capped mountains and glacial lake.

Note: It is required to bring warm clothes, such as warm jackets, down jacket, sweater, gloves, caps, scarfs. Our campsite is located by the snowcapped mountain.

Day 3
DAY 3: PAMPAJAPONESA – SISAYPAMPA - INKA CANAL

After breakfast, we will begin over an uphill trail, we will climb approximately two hours to reach the Inca Chiriaska Pass at 4,880m, which translates as ‘The place where the Inca gets cool down’, being the highest point of our adventure, from where we will see steep mountains. In the cracks of the Rocky Mountains, inhabits the Andean Condor, the world’s largest bird, probably flying around. After a short break taking our photos, we will continue downhill to Sisaypampa our lunch spot, a beautiful place with astonishing views of the surrounding mountains. In the afternoon after lunch, we continue to Inca Canal, place where we will set up our tents. On the way, we will see llamas and alpacas wandering around as they were wild animals. At the campsite, we will meet with local families who live in the area.

Inca people stayed in places like this quite difficult to access. The canal was built to prevent floodings usually happen in the rain season.

Day 4
DAY 4: SISAYPAMPA – WAYLLABAMBA- LLULLUCHAPAMPA

After a delicious breakfast, we begin our trek to the last part of the valley, which then enters to a wider are already part of the Inca Trail named Pampacahua. There we find an Inca farmland that is still in full use by the local settlements. At the end of the Pampa, we find our first Inca archaeological site named Paucarcancha on which we will stop to explore for some photos, subsequently, we will join the Inca Trail at Wayllabamba village for lunch, afterward, we continue on our way through Wayllabamba Valley toward Llullucha Pampa, place where we will spend the night enjoying all the great views in the valley.

Day 5
DAY 5: LLULUCHAPAMPA - PACAYMAYU – CHAKICOCHA

Today as every morning, we will wake you up with a cup of Coca tea, after a good breakfast, we leave Llullucha Pampa walking uphill to the highest point on the Inca trail at Warminuañusca “Dead woman’s pass” 4,217m/13,747ft, from where we will get an astonishing view of the valley. After a brief break, we will head downhill to Pacaymayu River, where we are going to have lunch. After lunch we continue on our way uphill for 2 more hours toward Runcurakay Pass at 3,977m/13,127ft; from here we enjoy the breathtaking views of all the surrounding mountains. Afterward, we head downhill for a couple of hours toward Chakicocha, our campsite (3,600m/11,847ft) where we spend the night.

At this point, we are going to find some groups are doing the classic Inca trail 4days/3nights.

Day 6
DAY 6: CHAKICOCHA - WIÑAYWAYNA

Today is the fascinating trek with great views of the valley, mountains, and archeological sites, beautiful part of the trail for our photos. After hiking about 2 hours on a gentle trail, we will reach the lookout point at Phuyupatamaca 3,750m/12,047ft from where we will see Urubamba Canyon, Machu Picchu Mountain, and Phuyupatamaca Inca site down below. After a brief story at the site enjoying the views, we continue on our way downhill for 2 hours through the cloud forest to Intipata, from where we will see our lunch spot at Wiñaywayna, we will spend the night and getting ready to reach our last destination the following day in the morning.

Today in the afternoon we will have the chance to visit one of the most beautiful Inca sites along the Inca Trail, Wiñaywayna at 2,650m/8,747ft.

Day 7
DAY 7: WIÑAYHUAYNA - MACHU PICCHU – BACK TO CUSCO

We leave our camp site early in the morning. After a small breakfast, we will go to the checkpoint and wait until 5:30 am, the time when the Rangers open the gate to trek the last part of the Inca Trail.

Today’s trek will take about two hours, on our way we will find the Sun Gate, from where we will have the first view of Machu Picchu city and all the surrounding mountains. After a small break for photos, we continue to enter the Inca citadel. Once we store our backpacks outside of Machu Picchu, we will enter again for our guided tour, having all information provided by your trekking guide, then, he will take you to explore the important sectors in the citadel, after 2.5 hours guided tour, you will have plenty of time for further exploration.

Note: If you purchased the admission tickets to climb Wayna Picchu Mt or Machu Picchu Mt, your guide will give you some instructions to know where and when you should leave, it could take 1.5 to 2 hours back and forth for Wayna Picchu and 3 hours for Machu Picchu Mountain.

The guide will meet you at Aguas Calientes town for lunch. Afterward, we take our return train to Ollantaytambo, where our private transportation will be waiting for us, we drive 2 hours back to Cusco.
