Day 1
DAY 1: CUSCO - PUMAHUANCA - PUYOC

We leave early in the morning driving to Pumahuanca village in the Sacred Valley, our first day of our adventure starts here. After breakfast we’ll begin our trek upon a slight uphill on the side of the valley, climbing about 1.150m / 3.373ft towards the village of Puyoc. On our way up we’ll visit the small Inca site of Pumahuanca and learn about the native plants, flowers, and birds that inhabit this valley.

This trek is not commonly done by many trekking companies. After hiking about 7 hours, we will reach our campsite at Puyoc 4100m / 13451ft this is the Puna area characterized by its sparse vegetation, it is common for it to snow up here during the dry season, so gloves and a hat are recommended.

From the pass, we make our way to Cuncani we’ll pass by snow-capped peaks further away, small mountain lagoon (Yanacocha – Black lagoon) meet the local people dressed up in their traditional bright clothing. Trekkers should be prepared for changes to the itinerary and to meet unexpected challenges with an open-mind and sense of adventure. Climbing Huayna Picchu is an excellent addition to a trip to Machu Picchu. It offers superlative views, but is a steep climb that can take about three hours. Entrance to Wayna Picchu is limited and at scheduled times; visitors must sign up for a spot in advance. If you would like to consider doing the climb, it is important to book it in advance.

One of the main attractions to the Lares Valley is the many fine textiles available for purchase directly from the people who made them. The communities are relatively isolated, however, so it is important to bring spending money in Peruvian currency in small denominations, as it may be difficult to make the change.

While not as difficult as some treks, the trek traverses two passes over 4000m. Trekkers should be in good physical condition and acclimated by spending at least a few days at Cusco (3400) or similar before attempting the trek. Additionally, weather and trail conditions can vary. Temperatures range from warm and humid to below freezing.
